panning for gold!!

saturday, october 17, 2009

this morning, we headed east towards grass valley.  my mom and sisters used to live there, and that is where my sister, brenny was born.  it’s a neat little old town that was big in the gold heyday.

then we went to the south yuba river, in bridgeport.  bridgeport boasts the largest covered bridge in the world.  its pretty impressive!

this is where we panned for gold.  it was SO cool!  when you look in the river, it is like someone sprinkled gold glitter in there.  it is shimmery everywhere you look.  so we bought an official gold panning pan and sat by the river and scooped up sand and swished it around until the gold flecks settled in the bottom.  it would take weeks every day doing this to accumulate enough gold to actually have something, but i did find some (!!) and had a lot of fun doing it. plus, it was a beautiful day, and julia and i had silly fun.

and, dont worry, this bear is no longer alive, but i gotta tell ya, it was scary just to look at it, truely…
