oregon by october 1st!!

thursday, october 1, 2009

woke up this morning in arco, id.  arco is a small town on rt 20 in southern idaho, with the designation of being the first american city to be powered by nuclear energy.  it lies west of a huge atomic energy research area that at one time in the mid-twentieth century had something like 50 nuclear reactors.

they also claim fame withIMG_1910 numbers hill.  a large hill in town that since the 1920’s, each high school senior class paints their year on the side of the hill.  it’s true. ---->

driving south and west on rt 20, we visited the craters of the moon national monument.  this area was once a hot bed of volcanic activity, leaving the landscape looking just like the moon:

idaho has some pretty countryside and we past a stop on the oregon trail

this afternoon, we crossed into oregon.  today is october 1st, and that was the plan.  oregon by october 1st, and we made it.  IMG_1946 first stop was the welcome center, and once parked, i broke down and cried. a heartfelt cry of thanks and exhaustion.  it was kinda like a “its so good to be home” cry, but ive never lived in oregon before.  i guess the goal for the past 17 days was to get to oregon, and now we are here, and it feels so good.  we stopped at the malheur county library this afternoon to check email, etc., and for me to install an antivirus software on my laptop, as the 30 day free trial of norton that came with it had expired (!!). tonight we sleep at the pilot travel plaza off rt 84 in ontario, oregon (not canada!!), and tomorrow we travel south and west towards crater lake.  i hope to get to grants pass saturday or sunday and find my grandparent’s graves. all julia wants is to go to the beach.  cant say i blame here, it’s been a long time comin.

some shots at the welcome center:
