i am in love with oregon

saturday, october 3, 2009

after leaving ontario, or, we headed west on rt 20, and crossed some wide open, desert-like countryside. it was very similar to wyoming, or even south dakota

then, over the last mountainette, the scenery turned from brown to green almost in an instant, it was pretty neat.

last night, we came through bend, or.  i could live there, even with snow.  it is such a beautiful small city, with friendly people, and beautiful countryside.  and, in oregon – all gas is full serv.  it’s kinda nice, yep.  we stopped at a gas station and asked if there was truck stop nearby for us to stay the night.  it had just gotten dark, but it was raining a little, and i think i had driven already 250 or so miles.  no truck stops in bend, but the cashier called his friend who said there was one about 25 miles south on 97.  we were going that way, so i figured i could do another 25 miles.  the 25 miles turned into 60 before we found the pilot truck stop in chemult, or.  tired from a narrow road in the icy rain, with big ass trucks, i slept like a baby.

this morning, we woke to 26 degrees, and frost.  we continued down 97 towards crater lake, through the most absolutely breathtaking scenery i have ever encountered via the rogue-umpqua scenic byway.  the 28 degrees and icy roads didnt even phase me (okay maybe a little) but the views were incredable:

and i do what i do:

then, we headed to interstate 5…

and at this moment, we are sitting in the josephine county library, in grants pass, or. updating the yob and researching my grandparents.  i hope to find their gravesites today, and i think we will find a place to camp tonight – with showers.
